LVC 18U Men Win Gold

The 18 and under men’s volleyball team, LVC Impact, coached by Dustin McCubbing (Milk River) and Scott Gilbert (Lethbridge) traveled to Red Deer this past weekend to compete in the Alberta Volleyball Premier #1 Tournament. The tournament consisted of 26 teams from all over Alberta. LVC Impact won their round-robin pool undefeated and then went on to play Red Deer Kings Green in a quarter final match in which LVC won in two straight sets. In the semi-finals, LVC Impact was matched up against Red Deer Kings Black and won in two sets with scores of 25-23 and 25-17. In the Championship finals LVC Impact came up against long time rivals Elite West Bam from Calgary. LVC won in three sets with scores of 22-25, 25-20, 15-13. This match was like the repeat of the previous season’s provincial final in which LVC defeated Elite West in a close battle with similar scores. The match had many great offensive and defensive plays and long rallies. Team Alberta players Chris Gilbert (LCI), Joel Dyck (LCI), and Brodie Haugan (Foremost) were able to connect for many kills over the weekend thanks to the great passing of Braedon Schmold (LCI). Rookie Eric Hinman (CCH) added key serving aces throughout the weekend. Josh Zoeteman (LCI), Logan Unreinger (Med Hat), Ian Torrance (Med Hat) and Spencer Moon (Vulcan) helped with many great blocks. Kam Mediwake (CCH) added some great defense and timely kills when the points really counted. Bob Ferguson (LCI) also contributed with great serving and back row kills. Both teams put on a exciting match for the many fans that were in attendance. "This year we have a new look to our team as we picked up 2 middles from Medicine Hat, 1 middle from Vulcan, and 2 new outside hitters. The challenge will be getting all players to communicate well with each other." We are looking forward to the rest of the season and especially competing at Nationals in Ottawa this May. Our next premier tournament is in Edmonton on February 23rd and 24th.
