LVC Synergy capture bronze medal at AVA Premier
The Lethbridge 16U Midget Girls Synergy volleyball team started the 2008 campaign with a bronze medal performance in Edmonton this past weekend at the Alberta Volleyball Association's first premier tournament.
Synergy opened play by sweeping its way through pool play with straight-set victories over Millet, Grande Prairie and Calgary Impact.
Their dominating play continued into the playoff round where Synergy once again swept its way into the semifinals with wins over FOG from Edmonton and the Spartans of Killiam.
In semifinal action, Synergy collided with Calgary Elite in a back-and-forth slugfest. Synergy came out of the gates slowly, surrending an 8-0 disadvantage and eventually losing the first set 22-25. After making some adjustments defensively, Synergy was able to stretch the match to three games with a convincing 25-16 second-set victory. The third set saw Synergy come up short, losing 15-11.
The hard-fought loss didn't seem to bother Synergy however as they quickly recovered to take home the bronze medal with a 25-17, 26-24 straight-set victory over Canuck Mania.
"The semifinal was as entertaining a match as I had seen in a while, two solid teams going at each other," LVC coach Dusty Stauth said. "The third set usually comes down to a break here or there and we just couldn't seem to get that break."
"I was really pleased though with how the girls bounced back to win the bronze medal, it shows what kind of character we have on this team. I tihnk the bronze medal match is the toughest to win, you have to find a way to put the disapppointment aside and carry on. I would give ourselves an 'A+' for how we reacted to a tough loss."
